We’ve had a busy fortnight in the depths of Edge Street, giving the walls and seating a spruce up, trim, wax and polish. Apologies for being closed on Monday and Tuesday day. It’s exhibition time soon, so expect a flurry of activity as we launch two exhibitions in the next few weeks.

All is swell. We hope you enjoyed your fill of free pancakes last night, maybe this made up for us being closed during the day. I will be taking a small break from writing the next two newsletters, read on for more information.

With thanks

Hacked!

We have had some recent online technical issues with a pair of egghead pranksters. Our Common website was hacked last week, by some sort of cult.

Clandestine followers of the ‘Church Of the Mystic Egg’ are laying claim to the incident, further investigations enlighten us that it is the workings of two obsessive artists, who are now threatening to daub our walls with ‘eggy mess’ in the next couple of weeks.

The now unmasked artists, SAVWO and Steve Hockett will be displaying their cultish findings on Thursday 8th March. Not much can be can done as the influence of the Church is strong, the power of the egg compels you.

You will have to pay us a visit to find out the results.

Next week’s newsletter

On Tuesday 28th February we will be handing over our newsletter to a couple of our favourite designers, Graham Sykes and Robert Walmsley, also know as Teacake Design.

We have had the pleasure of working with these two fine gentlemen over the past few years. Including branding for our sister bar, Port Street Beer House, a fanzine collaboration with Pull Yourself Together and all sorts of lovely posters and design work along the way.

I’m sure you will learn a lot more about them in next week’s newsletter special. The photography exhibition will be a first for us, as they take over BOTH of our venues, a challenge and a half! If anyone can perform such a task, it will be Teacake Design.

From March 1st 2012 Teacake will be exhibiting a special collection of photographs taken by the late Tom Culley. Split over two venues, this installation of large-scale images offers a glimpse into the varied past times of one man and his closest companions.

Discovered inadvertently, these images taken from a collection of over 5000 meticulously cherished slides portray life through the eyes of an accomplished amateur photographer. Always fascinated by the colourful antics of ordinary people enjoying extraordinary activities this perspective is both personal and insightful.

Tom’s passion for photography was simple; his aim was to preserve the funniest, most charming, most special and most poignant moments in order to share them with his loved ones.

Now we are lucky enough to be able to share them with you in the form of ‘Eggs no Soldiers’‚ at Common and ‚’A Pint of Mixed’ at Port Street Beer House.

/ BIOGRAPHY

Born on the 17th August 1925, Thomas Culley attended St Peters School, Accrington. In 1939 he was apprenticed as a painter and decorator at Milton Fodens. Before joining the Royal Navy as an Able Seamen in the Gunnery Branch Battleship King George V in 1943. As part of the Pacific fleet he was present at the formal surrender of the Japanese in Tokyo Bay 1945.

Returning home, Tom joined the Lancashire County Fire Brigade and served as a Sub Officer for 30 years at Accrington Fire Station. He received the long service medal and good conduct medal in 1971 before retiring in 1980. As a keen fisherman and model boat enthusiast Tom enjoyed a full itinerary of hobbies including painting, drawing and shooting cine films. An avid reader, he also had an extensive knowledge of local history. Tom died at the age of 84 in Lancashire on the 8th April 2010.

Launch night Thursday 1st March 6pm / Kestrel Suite, Common

Part two ‘A Pint of Mixed’ launches 7.30pm at Port Street Beer House
