3rd August 2011 – Port Street Beer House News

Hello!

Bit of a change again this week, we have decided to let our sister bar Port Street Beer House take over the Common newsletter, we hope you don’t mind.

Reason being is that they have quite a lot to shout about, having recently been shortlisted for a Manchester Food and Drink award in not one, but TWO categories. There are so many good things going on, we thought we would give them a bit of space.

SO here goes, plenty about beer here.

Work safe

Mr. W. Badger (N.A.A.D)

Shortlisted
Best Bar and Best Newcomer

It only seems like yesterday when our big brother Common won ‘best bar’ at the Manchester Food and Drink awards, way back in October 2010. At that time we were just a glint in our parents eyes.

Now we have started to taking our first steps to true independence, after six months of trading we have been nominated in TWO awards categories. First up is ‘Best Newcomer’, a very strong selection of venues are up for the nomination, in particular’ The Rose Garden’ in Didsbury and the subterranean food den, ‘Australasia’. If we were to win this it would be a great honour.

The second category is ‘Best Bar’, I do think Mr Web Badger put us forward for the ‘Best Pub’ category, but who are we to argue? Pub, bar, pub, bar which one are we, the debate could go on for months! We are just so happy to be the only venue with two nominations.

So please vote with your feet, or more importantly with the power of your mouse and click the link below and vote for who you think should win. Many thanks for all your support so far, may the best pub win!

Psst…. we’re backing North Tea Power for best Coffee Shop / Casual Dinning Award!

Thursday 4th August
International IPA Day

International #IPADay is a grassroots movement created to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers, and brewers worldwide, using social media as the common arena for connecting the conversation together.

On Thursday August 4th, craft beer drinkers across the social sphere and across the globe will raise pints in a collective toast to one of craft beer’s most iconic styles: the India Pale Ale. This celebrated style represents the pinnacle of brewing innovation with its broad spectrum of diverse brands, subcategories, and regional flavour variations – making it the perfect style to galvanise the craft beer’s social voice.

Port Street will be stocking special IPAs from Summer Wine, Flying Dog, Thornbridge, Great Divide, Magic Rock, Victory, Stone (TBC) and Brew Dog.

Monday 22nd August
‘Meet The Brewer’ with Thornbridge

Here at Port Street we like to get you closer to the people that make your beer, so we started up our ‘Meet The Brewer’ events. First we had the excellent Summer Wine Brewery and as I write this we are preparing for our Flying Dog event with head brewer Matt Brophy, the events have been going really well so far.

In a few weeks we have another one of our favourite brewers hosting an evening of exclusive tastings and informative chats. Last month we all went on a staff day out to Thornbridge Brewery, its was really exciting, so much so we invited them back to our place! They tell us they get asked all the time to organise meet the brewer events, but they tend to turn them down, so please treat this as an extra special event for Manchester!

Port Street will be presenting some exclusive brews from Thornbridge. The tickets gets you four halves of lovely beer and the chance to have a cheeky lock in after the event, as we aren’t normally open on Mondays.

Tickets are on sale tomorrow from the bar priced at £8 advance
6pm – 8pm (bar open until 10pm)
