Art at Common

This weeks newsletter is focusing our on artistic output which hopefully makes Common what it is. We like to work as far in advance as possible and would like to give you a heads up on what we have in store for the year ahead.
Strictly speaking we have six exhibitions a year, three in the main bar space and three in the kestrel suite. We also commission the outside space (see article below). You can normally purchase all the art on our walls, apart from the actual walls of course! Working closely with the artists we don’t just throw up some canvases, scribble a bit in the corners, oh no sir! We try to encourage a series of work which will never be repeated.
The next exciting twelve months looks something like this, from May 2011 we will be hosting work by Dave Bailey, Deanna Halsall, Rob Bailey (the final part in the trilogy), Red Cross Charity Art Sale (see below) plus Paul Hemmingfield and Adam Mead! I’m sure we will be enthusing somewhat about each artist in their own right very soon!
If you have missed out on any of the exhibitions you can delve deep into our archive here
Papergirl Manchester presents
Help Japan Art Sale

Illustrators, designers and photographers from around the world are donating prints, t-shirts, tote bags and knitted beards to raise money for the Japan tsunami relief efforts.
This will be a mix of originals and prints starting from £10*. Every penny will go to the Red Cross Japan tsunami appeal. We will be holding the art sale in the kestrel suite on Thursday 31st March. To take part click here. Please come down and support, purchase some art and do your bit for charity. Outside Wall
Spray or Paint

Forever chasing away the paparazzi and keen student photographers, our outside wall is becoming a bit of an art celebrity. A week doesn’t pass without a camera flash or keen fashion photo shoot proposition. This is probably due to the amazing artwork we have daubed upon our outer brick walls. Specially commissioned, this is not just a piece of graffiti, it is our third art space.
We are keen to keep this work up to date, so we are looking at budding artists to submit their ideas for our outdoor space. As a guide we are not really keen on graffiti work, this may sound a bit funny, but there are plenty of other places where you can get down with your bros and tag each other up, or what ever it is the kids do these days. So if you have an idea which may be a bit different, drop us a line.

Art In Another Place

Panoply is a performance art event based in costume, fashion design and theatre. It is a new cultural masquerade. The inaugural Panoply took place in October 2010. The Aim was to promote explorative works of performance art.
The Volkov Commanders bring Panoply to the vacant, Piccadilly Place ground floor retail units. The space is brutalist in it’s architectural style, without any soft wood or polished floors. Replacing the lack of shop furnishings with progressive fashion design and live sculptural works displayed in front of an audience. Appropriating ‚Äòcommerce‚Äô and the commercial in order to insert within it the hand made and conceptually driven.
Artists taking part include – Esther Arocha, Anna Beam, Anthea Bush, Sacred Geometry, Sally Gilford, Aliyah Hussain, Steve Hockett, Nicola Ruben Montini, Rachel Maclean, Mariel Osborn, Ashling Smith, Jo Scorah, Edward Indiana Wiffen, Estelle Wooley.
We will be hosting the after party at Common from 9pm /
The main event takes place on March 31st 2011 / 6-9pm / Piccadilly Place, Manchester, M1 3BN
