Welcome weather

Rain, rain, go away, come back another day!
The weather in Manchester, fun isn’t it? The winter months are drawing in and we are prepping ourselves to keep you safe and dry, just like a badger should do. It has come to my attention that Common is very much like a badgers ‘den’, warm and welcoming. Here to keep you safe from the harrowing outside world!
I hope you can all visit your local friendly ‘den’ very soon.
Stay dry.

Tears For Ears
Background information

We have a new Wednesday night called Tears For Ears, tonight sees local band Patterns spin some records for you. We have four residents spread across the fortnightly commune. If you’ve spent any time in Manchester, you’ve probably heard them making different sorts of noise in various different places.
Patterns are a band, who you should’ve seen live by now. They’ve got a single coming on Melodic and the NME and Guardian are pretty much smitten with them.
Emma Tillyer has spun plates at ‘Underachievers, Please Try Harder’ pretty much forever. She is also an outstanding member of the Common kitchen!
Kirsty Maguire pretty much runs ‘Underachievers’ as well as playing hits. It has been one of the most successful clubnights of the past 5 years.
Finally we have Matthew Britton who runs The Pigeon Post, a blog about new music. It featured on the BBC’s Sound of 2010 list. So the chances of you hearing a rare Camera Obscura b-side are as high as you hearing the latest Jai Paul or the latest internet sensation that’ll promptly be forgotten.
They promise to keep the vibes flowing and to make sure that your ears don’t cry, figuratively speaking. So stay chilled, and maybe don’t rule out the idea of dancing, even if it’s only in your seat. Tears For Ears every second and fourth Wednesday of the Month.

Kristian Jones and Adam Mead

Our walls have never looked so bright! Kristian Jones and Adam Mead are currently displaying their wares in our bar! We are so proud of the very hard work put in over the past few months, it has paid off well.
‘Lost In Youth’ is hosted in the main bar and depicts Kristian’s cut ‘n’ paste faceless children. Exploring childhood fears and emotions addled by a world of fast food and materialism. A colourful, yet bleak exhibition.
‘Facial Geography’ & ‘The Bee Keepers’ by Adam Mead is a stunning portraiture project. The colourful imagery and distinctive photography work explores the notion of surface, the striking faces and bright backgrounds make Adam’s work stand out a mile.
Both exhibitions have pieces of work for sale, at very reasonable prices. Kristian has various pieces including five prints, tote bags and t-shirts, prices start from only £5. All of Adam’s work is for sale ranging from A4 prints at £20 up to A1 prints for £60. All the work is in limited run and only available at Common. Please ask our friendly staff about purchasing some work today!
Week of the Dead
‘Seven scary Mexican themed days’

Any excuse to have a party, dress up and decorate the bar. Common will be celebrating a week of special events including Common Knowledge Halloween Special on Monday 31st October.
Pushing the ‘Day Of The Dead’ festival into seven days, we will decorate the whole place in glowing skulls, bright bunting and plenty of spooky skeletons. The kitchen will also be cooking up some Mexican themed specials.
The week long event cumulates with our fortnightly favourite quiz ‘Common Knowledge’. For the only time this year the quiz will be on a MONDAY! If anyone has been to our Halloween quiz specials you know you are in for a treat (or trick?!?). If you can, just make it to see our hosts John Ruane and Chris Higson’s costumes, then you will be onto a winner. Previous quiz specials have involved apple bobbing, a massive Thriller dance off and lots more ghoulish games. So come down for Common’s event of the year!

Meet the Brewer
with Jay Krause (Quantum Brewery)

Port Street continues to excel itself with the Meet The Brewer events, if you haven’t been to one before, then I suggest you get along to the next one with Quantum Brewery on Monday 31st October.
Mr Krause tells us about his brewery : “Based in Stockport, Quantum is all about experimenting with modern, forward thinking recipes but with a huge focus on flavour and quality of ingredients. The beers are mostly hop forward but not exclusively so – it’s far more about balance. As a new brewery we’re still finding our feet and don’t have a core range as such, but that has given us chance to experiment and focus on specials, series beers and collaborations”.
£6 advance – limited to 50 places / tickets available from behind the bar or via card payment over the phone – 0161 237 9949
Includes four beer samples, snacks AND your chance to win prizes in our special Halloween beer quiz!
Monday 31st October / 6pm until 8pm (bar open until 10pm)
